The Bear Facts:
The following information has been provided to us from the Ministry of Natural Resources.
How to prevent nuisance bears:
-
STORE GARBAGE IN STEEL BEAR-PROOF CONTAINERS
-
PUT GARBAGE OUT THE MORNING OF PICKUP
-
KEEP MEAT SCRAPS IN FREEZER UNTIL GARBAGE PICK UP
-
DO NOT FEED OTHER WILDLIFE AS YOU MAY ATTRACT BEARS( BIRD FEEDERS)
-
DO NOT LEAVE PET FOOD OUTDOORS AT NIGHT
-
CLEAN UP BBQ GRILLS AFTER USE
Bears will travel more than 100 km to a known food source-they will learn where their food sources can be found and seek them out and will re-visit a yard or campsite once they know that food can be obtained.
Bears are also attracted to
pet food, bird feeders, BBQ's, composters and fruit trees
Remember that even though an attractant to bears has been removed, it may take several days for a bear to stop visiting a particular area.
If you continue to have problems:
Complaints requiring direct intervention include such things as a bear doing damage to property with no attractants (source of food) present, a bear in a tree in an urban area with many people around, a bear breaking into a home, or persistent bear sightings in areas where this is potential for dangerous interaction with humans (e.g. a school yard).
Please contact the OPP if you feel a bear is causing eminent danger to humans.
