Accessibility

The Council of the Municipality of Shuniah is committed to excellence in serving all customers and strives at all times to provide its goods and services in a way that respects the dignity and independence of people with disabilities.

We are also committed to giving people with disabilities the same opportunity to access our goods and services and allowing them to benefit from the same services, in the sameplace and in a similar way as other customers.

Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (ODA)

The Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001 (ODA) (Link https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/05a11) received Royal Assent on December 14, 2001. The purpose of the ODA is to improve opportunities for people with disabilities through identification, removal and prevention of barriers to participation in the life of the province.

Accessibility plans are intended to address existing barriers to people with disabilities and to prevent new barriers from being established. All municipalities, regardless of their size, are required to prepare annual accessibility plans as part of their regular planning process.

Municipalities will not have to identify or remove all barriers all at once, however. They will have the flexibility to identify their own priorities. The plans can be as short as one page – or longer – depending on the issues identified by the community.

Municipalities are required to complete an annual accessibility compliance report. Our reports will be made available to the public upon request to the Municipal Office.

Accessibility Plan and Policy

The Municipality of Shuniah’s Accessibility Plan, describes the process by which the Municipality identifies and plans to remove and prevent barriers to people with disabilities.

The Municipality of Shuniah’s Accessibility Policy (see link below), establishes practices and procedures for Employees of the Municipality of Shuniah on providing goods or services to people with disabilities.

Support Persons and Service Animals

We are committed to welcoming people with disabilities who are accompanied by a support person. At no time will a person with a disability who is accompanied by a support person be prevented from having access to his or her support person while on our premises.

We are committed to welcoming people with disabilities who are accompanied by a service animal on the parts of our premises that are open to the public and other third parties.
