Recreation Halls

The MacGregor Recreation Centre was built in 1967 through Canada’s Centennial Year funding initiative. It includes a parking lot, grounds, baseball field and skating rink and is located at 800 Lakeshore Drive, Shuniah Ontario and is situated across the road from Wild Goose Park.

The MacGregor Recreation Centre has a large open area in the upper level of the building, which can be used in multiple ways including parties, dances, meetings, dinners, etc. The lower level of the building has a smaller area mainly used for early years play groups or yoga, which is equipped a kitchen with a fridge, oven, stove, and counter space. The upper level has a capacity of 140 individuals and the lower level has a capacity of 80 individuals.

All fees are to be paid to the office of the Municipality of Shuniah prior to the events date. The office accepts cheque, debit and cash as forms of payment

Committee Meetings

This Committee generally meets on the 3rd Thursday of every month except December. We are part of and support the efforts of the Thunder Bay and Area Food Strategy.

Youth Group Events

Shuniah Youth Group Programs are held at the MacGregor Recreation Centre: 800 Lakeshore Drive, Shuniah, Ontario

Shuniah Youth Groups – Our Shuniah Youth Group established in 2007, has seen hundred of kids participate in a wide variety of weekly activities held at the centre. It is a safe and friendly place for our youth to participate in weekly activities and special events while meeting other kids in their own community! Drop in activities for youth grade three and up (Kids must sign in and out of centre). Younger children welcome to participate in activities with parental supervision.

The Youth Program offers basketball nets, skating rink, sports nights, dances, bingo, ping-pong, shuffleboard, pool table, air hockey, and video games. Overall, a great place to hang out and meet friends.

Reminder:

  • Use caution when walking on concrete surface (additional rubber mats have been ordered)
  • Do not cross taped off areas

Community rinks are unsupervised. Users of the rink facilities do so at their own risk, and therefore, voluntarily assume all risks associated with use. The Municipality of Shuniah does not assume responsibility for related risks or injuries. Outdoor equipment/structures are not sanitized.

Community rinks are for all users to share and enjoy, please share the ice fairly at all times.

The lights for skating at the pavilion are scheduled to come on at 5:30pm and turn off at 10:30pm.

The doors to the rink shack building unlock at 7:30am and automatically lock at 10:30pm daily.

Rinks are weather dependent and are typically open from mid-December through mid-March.

Community Rink Rules:

  • Maintenance closures: All rinks are subject to closures for regular maintenance. Please respect the closure and maintenance times.
  • rink availability is weather-dependent
  • do not use rinks during periods of thaw when ice surface is wet or soft
  • the use of appropriate helmets is strongly recommended
  • please respect our environment, dispose of litter in the receptacle provided
  • slap shots are not permitted at any time
  • pucks must stay on the rink surface at all times
  • Rough play, speed and figure skating, and multiplayer games (such as tag and races) is not permitted
  • Foul language or inappropriate behaviour is not permitted
