Contractor Scam Targeting Residents
Residents Should Be Mindful Of:
- Be cautious of unsolicited contractors who go door-to-door offering discounted services or claiming to have “leftover” materials.
- Obtain multiple written estimates before agreeing to any work.
- Research the contractor, including independent online reviews and verifying that contact information is valid.
- Avoid making large cash payments or paying the full amount before work is completed.
- Request a written contract outlining the scope of work, cost, and payment schedule.
- Ask for proof of business registration and liability insurance where applicable.
- Be cautious if you are pressured to make an immediate decision or payment.
- If you believe you have been targeted by a scam, report it to the Ontario Provincial Police as soon as possible and notify the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
